Han Kang: The Vegetarian (Hardcover, Hogarth) 5 stars

Translation of Ch'aesikchuŭija (Published 2007 by Ch'angbi)

Bizarre but brilliant

5 stars

Had no idea what to expect from this book, and not to spoil anything, but vegetarianism is a small part of what it's about. The only together person in the whole book is the "crazy" one.

Peter May: Black Loch (2024, Quercus) 4 stars

Good follow up to the Lewis Trilogy

4 stars

I think I'm done with Peter May books. I really liked the first trilogy I read (the Lewis books), but have not enjoyed the other series he writes as much. This one was a 20 or so years later follow up to that series and I liked it. Also includes some serious anti salmon farming sentiments.

Rivka Galchen: Little labors (2016) 4 stars

Little Labors is a slanted, enchanted literary miscellany. Varying in length from just a sentence …

Quirky and thought provoking

4 stars

A series of essays, some really short, the longest only a few pages long, that seemed all over the map, but she still brought it all together very well.

Anne Michaels: Held (Hardcover, 2023, Bloomsbury Publishing Plc) 3 stars

A breathtaking and mysterious new novel from the beloved Anne Michaels, internationally bestselling author of …

New year, foggy mind

3 stars

The writing in this book is beautiful, but I struggled to keep up with the characters and the generation changes, so I'm thinking it's my fault more than the author's.

Samantha Harvey: Orbital (Paperback, 2024, Penguin Random House) 4 stars

Life on our planet as you've never seen it before

A team of astronauts in …

Space station drama

5 stars

Short book, but very thoughtful and actually makes you feel like you're in orbit with the crew on the space station. Every day, they're amazed to look back on our little blue dot in the universe. The notion of having 8 ? sunrises and sunsets per day while they orbit I found fascinating.

Emily Austin: Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead (Hardcover, 2021, Atria Books) 5 stars

Gilda, a twenty-something, atheist, animal-loving lesbian, cannot stop ruminating about death. Desperate for relief from …

Tough subject but very funny

5 stars

Gilda is a depressed, hypochondriac, atheist lesbian who gets a job as a secretary in a Catholic church. This is pretty dark subject matter but there are some very funny scenes when Gilda is at mass and trying to figure out the lines..... "The jig is up!!". Had no idea what this was going to be about, but I really enjoyed it.

Percival Everett: James (Hardcover, 2024, Doubleday) 5 stars

When Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New …

Great perspective

4 stars

Good version and deviation from the original story. Came to this book after reading reading The Time of the child, which I enjoyed much more, so I may be being hard on it by only giving it four stars.

James Lee Burke: Clete (2024, Grove/Atlantic, Incorporated) 3 stars

This series has maybe run it's course

3 stars

There is a long series of books featuring Dave Robichaux and Clete Purcel set in and around New Orleans. Kind of hard boiled vets who follow their own code, which is usually honest but not quite within the law. Didn't enjoy this as much as some earlier ones - I think I'm done with this series.
